01

Do you need to file under MTD?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces one annual return with four quarterly updates plus a final declaration. Whether it applies to you, and from when, depends on your gross self-employment and property income.

01 / 04

Do you have income from self-employment or UK property?

Sole trade, freelancing, a rental property, or a share of one. Employment, dividends and pensions do not count here.

What is your gross income from those sources?

Total turnover and rent for a full year, before any expenses. Estimate for the year from April 2026 if you are not sure.

£

Do you have a UK National Insurance number?

Without one by 31 January before the tax year, you are automatically outside MTD for that year. This mostly affects non-resident landlords.

Have you already filed at least one Self Assessment return?

MTD only starts after your first return has been submitted. If you are newly self-employed, your start date moves back a year.

A calculator is not advice

What it does

Applies the published rates and thresholds to the numbers you type, in the browser, on your own machine.

What it misses

Pension contributions, student loans, other income, marginal relief edge cases, a spouse, and the year you actually want the money in.

What we do

Run the same sums against your real accounts before the year end closes, while the answer can still be changed.

Get the number checked against your actual accounts.
